Woman Allegedly Declares Living Husband Dead to Take Child Abroad: NADRA
Living Man Declared Dead in Records Through Alleged Family Fraud
ISLAMABAD: (Web Desk) A woman allegedly had her living husband declared dead in official records through fraudulent means, obtained a passport for their child by claiming the child was an orphan, and subsequently took the child abroad, a National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) spokesperson has disclosed.
The unusual case was shared by NADRA spokesperson Syed Shabahat Ali during a podcast, where he explained how a living person could be wrongly registered as deceased and how such an error could be corrected.
Ali said such cases could occur when a death is fraudulently registered with a Union Council on the basis of incorrect information or a forged death certificate.
Explaining the procedure for restoring the identity records of someone wrongly declared dead, he said the affected person must visit a NADRA registration centre and undergo biometric verification. Once the verification is successful, NADRA can restore the person’s identity record without requiring additional documents for this particular process.
The spokesperson clarified that initiating a police case over fraudulent death registration does not fall within NADRA’s responsibility. The affected individual or another relevant party must approach the relevant law enforcement authorities to pursue legal action.
He added that a person seeking restoration of their NADRA record does not necessarily need a court order. A visit to a NADRA centre for biometric verification is sufficient for the authority to initiate the restoration process.
However, if required by a court, NADRA can provide the documents submitted to the Union Council for the death registration, along with relevant information available in its database.
Ali also clarified that Union Councils do not work under NADRA, although the authority provides them with computerised software for maintaining civil registration records.
He said Union Council staff are responsible for entering death registrations into the system, while family members are responsible for reporting the death of a relative.
The spokesperson stressed that a death cannot be registered solely on the basis of a verbal statement. The process requires relevant forms, identity card details, witnesses’ signatures and other supporting information
