United Flight 1681 Returns to Las Vegas Over Security Concern

Passengers heading to Newark landed almost nine hours late after the plane turned back and the crew ran out of legal duty hours.

Las Vegas – (Special Correspondent/Web Desk) – United flight 1681 left passengers stuck for hours after it turned back to Las Vegas because of a possible security concern. The travelers reached their final stop almost nine hours later than planned.

The flight took off from Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas at around 10:30 p.m. local time on October 24. It was heading to Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey.

The trip was supposed to last about five hours. But things changed fast.

About one hour after takeoff, the Boeing 737 turned around and flew back to Las Vegas. United Airlines shared this detail in a statement to USA TODAY.

The airline did not say what the security concern was. It only described it as a “potential security concern.”

Local station KSNV added a little more. Citing airport officials, it reported that the plane returned after a report of a passenger disturbance.

The airport also spoke with USA TODAY. It confirmed that the flight came back because of security reasons. For more details, it sent questions to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

The police department has not replied to the request for comment so far. That means the exact cause is still unclear.

There was some good news. No one was hurt. The plane carried 150 passengers and six crew members, and all of them were safe.

Still, the trip was far from over. After the plane landed in Las Vegas, the crew could not simply fly again.

The reason was a crew timeout. This happens when pilots or flight attendants reach the maximum number of hours they are legally allowed to work. Once that limit is hit, they must stop and rest.

Because of this rule, the flight was delayed overnight. Passengers had to wait until the next day to continue their journey.

The plane finally took off again on October 25 at around 7 a.m. It landed in Newark at about 3 p.m. Eastern Time, according to FlightAware.

That was more than eight hours after the original arrival time. For many travelers, it meant a long night and a lost day.

Delays like this can be stressful. Families miss events, workers miss meetings, and people lose their plans. Even when safety is the reason, the waiting is hard.

Safety, however, comes first. Airlines often return to the airport when a security concern comes up, even if it means a big delay.

At this time, United has not given more information about what happened on board. Readers should watch for updates from the airline and the police.
