USS Abraham Lincoln Arrives in Thailand After Middle East Deployment

Thailand: (News Desk) – The US aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln arrived in Thailand on Wednesday for its first port visit in nine months, offering around 5,000 sailors and Marines a long-awaited opportunity to rest after an extended deployment in the Middle East.

The nuclear-powered carrier was guided by tugboats toward Laem Chabang port, near the resort city of Pattaya. Dozens of military aircraft were visible on its flight deck as the massive warship approached the port.

Rear Admiral Robert Loughran, commander of US Carrier Strike Group 3, said the stop would give sailors and Marines a chance to rest and recharge. Captain Dan Keeler, the carrier’s commanding officer, described the visit as the first port call of what he called a historic deployment, following 286 consecutive days at sea.

The USS Abraham Lincoln left California in November 2025 for operations in the South China Sea but was later redirected to the Middle East amid escalating tensions involving the United States, Israel and Iran.

The carrier’s arrival comes amid controversy in the United States over reported conditions aboard the ship. Democratic lawmakers have called for an investigation following reports of food shortages, plumbing problems and serious mental-health concerns among crew members, including attempted suicides.

US officials have pushed back against criticism of the deployment. Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao said in August that a limited number of mental-health cases had been treated without loss of life, while President Donald Trump dismissed concerns about the length of the carrier’s deployment.

Pattaya Prepares for US Sailors

Pattaya, a major Thai tourist destination, has been a popular rest-and-recreation stop for US military personnel since the Vietnam War. The city is known for its beaches, entertainment venues and nightlife, including a long-standing association with sex tourism.

Pattaya authorities say additional arrangements have been made for the sailors’ visit. Buses will transport personnel between the ship and the city until the carrier leaves Thailand on Sunday.

Pattaya Mayor Poramase Ngampiches said the authorities would focus on visitor safety and preventing businesses from overcharging US military personnel. Sailors have reportedly been advised against activities such as jet skiing and taking advantage of Thailand’s cannabis laws.

The visit is expected to provide a boost to local businesses, with restaurants, shopping centres and other tourist attractions preparing for the influx of US service members.

After the USS Abraham Lincoln’s deployment, the USS George Washington has taken over its role in the Middle East. According to the US Naval Institute, the George Washington is expected to eventually be replaced by the USS Theodore Roosevelt, which is scheduled to depart San Diego in the coming weeks.

The United States has maintained a carrier presence in the Arabian Sea amid its military operations involving Iran and efforts to enforce a naval blockade of Iranian ports.
