IOPC Opens Investigation After Seven Die in Fatal Middlesbrough Collision

LONDON: (News Desk) – Seven people, including two police officers, have died in a devastating road collision during a police pursuit near Middlesbrough in the United Kingdom.

The fatal crash occurred at around 3:39am on Saturday in South Bank, when a Volkswagen Passat travelling on the wrong side of the A66 collided with a marked police vehicle travelling in the opposite direction.

The two officers killed in the crash were identified as 37-year-old PC Matthew Blades and 38-year-old PC Tom Clough.

Five occupants of the Volkswagen also died in the collision. Cleveland Police said specialist officers were supporting the families of everyone who lost their lives in the tragedy.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash after receiving a mandatory referral from Cleveland Police.

Investigators will examine the events leading up to the collision, including the circumstances surrounding the police pursuit and the movements of the vehicles before the fatal impact.

The investigation is expected to establish the sequence of events and determine the circumstances that contributed to one of the area’s most serious recent road tragedies.
