Sugar Mills Seek Immediate Export of 633,000 Tonnes of Surplus Sugar

ISLAMABAD: (Finance Reporter) – Sugar mill owners have once again urged the federal government to immediately allow the export of 633,000 tonnes of surplus sugar, warning that large unsold stocks are putting severe financial pressure on the industry.

In a letter to the Federal Minister for National Food Security, the sugar mills’ association made the request for the third time, seeking urgent approval for the export of the surplus commodity.

According to the association, Pakistan had approximately 3.1 million metric tonnes of sugar stocks as of July 31, 2026, while average monthly domestic consumption stands at around 564,196 tonnes.

The association estimated that nearly 1.197 million tonnes of surplus sugar could remain available at the beginning of the next crushing season.

It urged the government to immediately permit the export of 633,000 tonnes and allow the remaining surplus to be exported within one month of the start of the new crushing season.

The sugar industry also warned that another bumper sugarcane crop is expected in the upcoming season, with sugar production potentially reaching around 8 million tonnes, which could exceed domestic demand and further increase surplus stocks.

The mill owners said they were facing difficulties in managing large quantities of unsold sugar and claimed that the industry was experiencing a serious shortage of funds.

They called for an early government decision on sugar exports, saying the move would help reduce surplus inventories and ease the financial burden on sugar mills.
