Iran Sets Six Conditions for Hormuz Reopening

TEHRAN: (News Desk) –  Iran has outlined six conditions for the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, saying the strategic waterway will remain closed unless Washington changes its approach toward Tehran.

According to a statement attributed to Iran’s Secretary of the National Security Council, Zolqadr, Tehran is seeking firm guarantees that Iran will not face further threats or insults and that the conflict involving Iran and its allies will come to a permanent end.

Iran has also demanded an end to the naval blockade, the withdrawal of US forces from areas around Iran and compensation for losses it says were caused by the conflict.

Tehran is further calling for the removal of sanctions it considers unfair and unlawful, along with the unconditional release of Iranian funds and assets that have been frozen or seized.

Iranian officials have warned that the Strait will not be fully reopened unless Washington changes its position, whether the situation moves toward renewed conflict or diplomatic negotiations.

Temporary Shipping Route Being Considered

Earlier, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran was nearing an understanding with Oman over a temporary shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz.

Araghchi said Iran’s armed forces had prepared an alternative route through the strategic waterway. However, he clarified that the arrangement should not be viewed as confirmation that the Strait would be fully reopened.

The Iranian foreign minister said reopening the waterway would depend on several factors, including progress in resolving outstanding disagreements with the United States.

Araghchi also accused Washington of breaching a memorandum of understanding and argued that the current crisis stemmed from those alleged violations. He urged the US to resolve the disputed issues before further progress could be achieved.

The Strait of Hormuz is a vital global energy route connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. Any extended disruption to shipping could affect international trade, oil supplies and global energy prices.
