South Korea Heatwave Death Toll Rises to Sixteen

Seoul: (News Desk) – South Korea has reported 16 heat-related deaths this year as the country continues to battle an unprecedented heatwave.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, 2,025 people have suffered heat-related illnesses between May 15 and August 2, with 16 fatalities recorded during the period.

The country has shattered its all-time temperature record three times in the past week. On Sunday, the city of Yangsan registered 42.5°C, the highest temperature ever recorded in South Korea.

Authorities have also issued a severe heatwave warning for the capital, Seoul, where temperatures are expected to approach 40°C once again.

To protect vulnerable residents, medical teams are monitoring nearly 63,000 high-risk people, including elderly citizens and individuals with disabilities.

As part of efforts to reduce urban heat, around 200 water trucks are spraying roads across nearly 2,000 kilometres in Seoul to help lower surface temperatures.
