Teen Withdraws Mental Health Lawsuit Against Meta Before Trial

Los Angeles: (Web Desk) – A 15-year-old Florida teenager has withdrawn his lawsuit against Meta just days before it was scheduled to go to trial in Los Angeles, bringing an end to one of the most closely watched legal cases involving social media’s impact on young people’s mental health.

The teenager, identified in court documents as R.K.C., alleged that excessive use of social media platforms contributed to anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts. According to the lawsuit, he continues to receive treatment for his mental health. His case had been selected as a bellwether trial, meaning its outcome could have influenced thousands of similar lawsuits filed across the United States.

The trial was set to begin on July 27 and would have proceeded with Meta as the only remaining defendant after YouTube, TikTok, and Snap each reached confidential settlement agreements with the plaintiff.

In a joint statement, the teenager’s lawyers, Emily Jeffcott and Rahul Ravipudi, said their client believed he had achieved his goal of holding social media companies accountable and encouraging stronger protections for young users. They added that he decided to withdraw the case to avoid a lengthy and emotionally demanding trial so he could focus on his recovery and ongoing therapy.

Meta welcomed the decision, saying the plaintiff ended the case without receiving any financial compensation from the company. A company spokesperson argued that the allegations lacked merit and said Meta successfully defended itself against what it described as baseless claims. The company also stated that evidence showed the teenager spent only a limited amount of time on Facebook and Instagram and created most of his accounts after retaining legal counsel.

The case follows a landmark verdict in March in which a Los Angeles jury ordered Meta and Google to pay $6 million to a 20-year-old woman in the first bellwether trial involving similar allegations. Meta also continues to face multiple lawsuits across the United States over claims that its platforms are addictive and harmful to children and teenagers, including cases brought by several states and other plaintiffs.
