UK Allows Airlines Flexibility Amid Summer Fuel Shortage
Fuel Crisis Prompts UK to Ease Airline Slot Rules
LONDON: (Web Desk) – Airlines in the United Kingdom may soon be allowed to cancel flights weeks in advance without losing valuable take-off and landing slots at congested airports, under new government proposals aimed at managing potential fuel shortages this summer.
The plan is designed to help carriers avoid last-minute disruptions, giving them flexibility to adjust schedules ahead of time while minimizing inconvenience for passengers.
Under the proposed measures, airlines would also be permitted to combine flights operating on the same route within a single day. This would allow passengers to be rebooked onto alternative services, helping airlines conserve fuel while maintaining operations.
The move comes as concerns grow over aviation fuel supply. The UK relies on imports for about 65 percent of its jet fuel, much of which typically arrives from the Middle East.
However, ongoing disruptions linked to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz have restricted supply routes, raising the risk of shortages and forcing authorities to consider contingency measures.
Officials say the proposals aim to strike a balance between maintaining airline efficiency and reducing the impact on travelers during a period of global uncertainty.
