Pakistan Calls for Renewed Ukraine Peace Talks

Govt of Pakistan Reiterates Support for Diplomatic Solution to Ukraine War

NEW YORK: (Web Desk): Pakistan has expressed deep concern over the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and has called for renewed diplomatic engagement to achieve a negotiated and lasting peace, stressing that dialogue remains the only viable path forward.

Speaking at a UN Security Council briefing on the maintenance of international peace and security related to Ukraine, Muhammad Kamran Taj, Counsellor at Pakistan’s UN Mission, said the war—now in its fifth year—continues to severely impact civilians and worsen an already critical humanitarian situation.

He noted that continued hostilities are deepening human suffering, eroding mutual trust, and making peace efforts increasingly difficult. He emphasized that the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure is a core obligation under international humanitarian law and must be fully respected by all parties.

Mr. Taj welcomed recent developments that could support peace efforts, including the announcement of an Easter ceasefire by both Russia and Ukraine, as well as a recent exchange of prisoners of war facilitated by the United Arab Emirates. He said such steps could help create momentum for further progress.

Reaffirming Pakistan’s consistent position since the start of the conflict, he said the country strongly believes that dialogue and diplomacy are the only sustainable solutions to end the war. He also noted growing global support for a negotiated settlement and called for a structured, sustained, and meaningful peace process.

He expressed hope that the current pause in negotiations would be temporary and that talks between the two sides would resume soon. He urged both parties to demonstrate political will, engage constructively, and work toward a comprehensive agreement that respects legitimate security concerns while remaining aligned with the UN Charter and international law.

Concluding his remarks, Mr. Taj reiterated Pakistan’s readiness to support all international efforts aimed at achieving a peaceful, comprehensive, and durable resolution of the conflict.
