China’s Cosco orders all Gulf-bound vessels to safer waters urgently

Cosco directs Gulf-bound ships to safe waters as regional tensions rise following US-Israel strikes on Iran’s Strait of Hormuz.

Chinese Shipping – (Web Dek) – Chinese shipping giant Cosco has instructed vessels already in or heading to the Gulf to move to “safe waters” amid disruptions following the US-Israel strikes on Iran. The Shanghai-based, state-owned company is the latest major shipping firm to pause operations after Iran’s Revolutionary Guards declared the Strait of Hormuz closed on Saturday.

Cosco stated that ships currently in the Gulf, after completing their operations where possible, should head to safe areas to hover or anchor. Vessels on their way to the Gulf have been advised to prioritize navigational safety by slowing down, moving to secure waters, or waiting at designated sheltered anchorages.

The company also said it is reviewing contingency plans for all cargo affected, including possible alternative ports for unloading.

Other shipping giants including Maersk and MSC have also announced halted operations in the region.

State media in Oman, which sits across the strait from Iran, said Sunday an oil tanker off its coast had been targeted and four of its crew hurt.

Also on Sunday, UK authorities said that a ship off the UAE’s coast near the strait reported being hit by an “unknown projectile causing a fire”.
