Afridi Admits Provoking Shaheen for Strong Response
Shahid Afridi Says He Challenged Shaheen to Spark Performance
ISLAMABAD: (Web Desk) – Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has disclosed that excluding fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi from his preferred playing XI was a deliberate psychological tactic rather than a reflection of form or ability.
Speaking during a private television broadcast, Afridi explained that his comments ahead of Pakistan’s high-profile clash against England were intended to provoke a competitive reaction from Shaheen, who is also his son-in-law.
Afridi said he intentionally used strong language to trigger Shaheen’s ego, believing that certain players respond best when directly challenged. He added that understanding a player’s temperament is a key part of leadership and effective man-management.
The former all-rounder maintained that even if asked to select the team again, he would still leave Shaheen out, stressing that mental stimulation can sometimes be more impactful than tactical backing.
Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah to miss T20 World Cup 2026?
Responding to criticism that his remarks followed Shaheen’s impressive display, Afridi claimed he had anticipated the reaction well before the match. He said he even discussed it at home, confident that Shaheen would not ignore the challenge if given the opportunity.
Shaheen delivered a fiery spell of 4 for 30 against England in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, although Pakistan narrowly lost the match by two wickets.
Earlier in the tournament, Shaheen had been dropped for matches against Namibia and New Zealand, managing only three wickets in three games, which intensified debate over his place in the playing XI.
