Kapil Sharma reflects on losing father and fighting depression at 36

Kapil Sharma reflects on grief, depression, and comebacks, sharing how personal loss and resilience shaped his life and comedy career

India – (Web Desk) – Kapil Sharma, one of India’s most loved comedians, recently spoke candidly about the highs and lows that have shaped his journey, including the pain of losing his father and his struggle with depression at the age of 36.

In an interview with ETimes, Kapil shared that every phase of his life left a deep impact on him. He recalled how his childhood felt complete when his father was alive, but everything changed after his father’s death in 2004. Life, he said, went off balance before television gave him a fresh start and helped him find his way again.

However, success did not shield him from emotional struggles. At 36, depression took a heavy toll, and many people believed his career was over. Marriage and the return of his show marked another turning point, leading him to perform in more than 300 episodes once again.

Kapil also opened up about the emotional void left by his father. He remembered winning The Great Indian Laughter Challenge Season 3 and receiving a prize of ₹10 lakh, a moment that brought him to tears because his father was not there to see it. He shared a touching memory of standing outside his home at 9 pm when his show first aired, hearing laughter from televisions in every house nearby. In that quiet moment, he wished his father could have witnessed his success. While he misses him every day, Kapil admitted that some memories still hit especially hard.

Kapil moved to Mumbai from Amritsar aspiring to be a singer but rose to fame after winning the third season of The Great Indian Laughter Challenge in 2007.

He later won Comedy Circus and launched his own show, Comedy Nights with Kapil, in 2013 under his K9 Productions banner, solidifying his status as one of India’s top comedians.

In 2015, Kapil made his Bollywood debut in the romantic comedy Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon, which was a commercial success. He also appeared in films like Firangi, Zwigato, and Crew, and was most recently seen in Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2.
