Messi Statue in India Sparks Shoaib Malik Comparisons
Fans say the statue looks less like Messi and more like Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik.
ISLAMABAD: A giant statue installed in India in honor of global football superstar Lionel Messi has sparked amusement rather than admiration on social media.
Fans say the statue looks less like Messi and more like Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik. The 70-foot-tall iron statue was unveiled in Kolkata during Messi’s India GOAT Tour, depicting him holding the FIFA World Cup trophy.
Social media users pointed out that the facial features, beard, and overall appearance resemble Shoaib Malik more than Lionel Messi. Many joked online, asking whether the statue was meant to be Messi or a “football version of Shoaib Malik.”

Some users humorously described it as a “Messi and Shoaib Malik collaboration,” while others said that without a nameplate, they would have assumed it was a statue of the Pakistani cricket star. A few even joked that Shoaib Malik himself should visit and take a photo with the statue.
