Germany to pay local US military personnel during shutdown.

Germany will pay the October salaries for local US base employees affected by the Washington government shutdown.

BERLIN – (Special Correspondent / Web Desk) –  Germany intends to pay around 11,000 local personnel at US military posts in the nation whose pay has been affected by the government shutdown in Washington, the finance ministry announced Wednesday.

“The federal government will initiate an unscheduled expenditure to ensure that October salaries are paid on time,” according to a ministry representative.

Verdi, a trade union, said on Tuesday that local employees have been paid during previous US government shutdowns, but it was concerned that the current Trump administration would suspend paychecks.

The union said that doing so would be a clear violation of German law, and it urged a way to avoid any lost salary.

The finance ministry spokeswoman told AFP on Wednesday that it currently remains unclear whether US payments might still come through despite the shutdown.

But the federal government in Berlin and the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate struck the deal to guarantee salaries will be paid and avoid any issues, she said.

The German government anticipates being reimbursed for the payroll cost once the US side makes payment, according to the spokeswoman.

Berlin’s contribution is “a sign of solidarity with the US armed forces stationed in Germany and their civilian employees,” she added.
