ISLAMABAD: The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a global alert after detecting three contaminated cough syrups in India, warning that the medicines could cause serious and potentially fatal health complications.
According to WHO, the syrups in question are Coldrif by Sresan Pharmaceutical, Respifresh TR by Rednex Pharmaceuticals, and ReLife by Shape Pharma. The contaminated batches were found to contain diethylene glycol, a toxic chemical used in industrial products, at levels nearly 500 times higher than the permissible limit.

India’s Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) confirmed that the syrups were consumed by several children under the age of five in Chhindwara, a city in Madhya Pradesh, who later died.
Health officials said the products were not exported, and there is no evidence of illegal distribution outside India. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) also verified that none of the affected medicines were imported into the United States.
The WHO has urged all countries to monitor and report any detection of these syrups immediately and to remove them from circulation to prevent further harm.
