FBR Cracks Down on Wealthy Social Media Users Flaunting Lavish Lifestyles

The department will compare last year’s tax filings with the current year’s to pinpoint discrepancies.

Islamabad – The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has launched an extensive crackdown on affluent individuals showcasing their extravagant lifestyles on social media platforms, warning that failure to update income tax returns in accordance with their spending will lead to legal action.

In a bold move to curb tax evasion, the FBR has collected data on over 100,000 individuals who are regularly seen displaying luxury homes, high-end vehicles, designer clothing, expensive jewellery, and lavish wedding celebrations through photos and videos on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook.

According to FBR officials, individuals flaunting wealth online have come under tight scrutiny. The department’s dedicated social media monitoring team has been tracking users whose online presence suggests lifestyles far beyond what is reported in their tax filings.

One official revealed that some people have been spotted wearing wedding suits costing up to $20,000, raising serious questions about undeclared income. “These displays of extreme luxury must be justified through proper documentation and declared income,” the official stated.

Sources within the FBR confirmed that nearly 80% of all tax returns will be audited this year to detect inconsistencies. The crackdown will focus on identifying individuals who have not disclosed significant increases in their income, assets, or spending habits.

“Action will be taken against those who do not disclose the increase in annual income in their returns,” FBR officials said.

The department will compare last year’s tax filings with the current year’s to pinpoint discrepancies. Anyone found hiding assets or underreporting income will be required to explain the source of their wealth.

The FBR is also targeting extravagant weddings where excessive spending is publicly showcased. From designer outfits and luxury jewellery to over-the-top event decor, authorities say such expenses must be reflected in official income disclosures.

The FBR has warned that individuals who fail to provide accurate and updated income tax returns will face strict legal consequences, including penalties and possible prosecution.

However, the board has also clarified that no action will be taken against those who voluntarily update and accurately report their income and assets.

“Nothing will be said to those who submit correct and updated income details,” the FBR clarified, urging all citizens—especially high-profile influencers and entrepreneurs—to ensure their filings reflect their actual lifestyle.
