China and Pakistan strengthen ties on security and launch a new phase of economic corridor projects.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, General Asim Munir, held high-level talks in Islamabad this Friday. Their discussion centred on a shared vision for regional security and mutual efforts in counter-terrorism.

The meeting underscored the deep, “all-weather” strategic partnership between the two nations. Both leaders committed to enhancing their cooperation on the international stage. Foreign Minister Wang Yi reaffirmed China’s unwavering support for Pakistan’s sovereignty and economic growth, while General Munir thanked China for its longstanding partnership.

This meeting was part of a broader series of dialogues Wang Yi held with Pakistan’s top leadership, including the Prime Minister and President. The conversations consistently highlighted a unified stance on global issues.

A major outcome of the visit was the agreement to upgrade the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Dubbed “CPEC 2.0”, this new phase will transform the project into a corridor focused on growth, livelihoods, green energy, and openness. Both nations agreed to deepen cooperation in industry, agriculture, and mining to boost Pakistan’s economic resilience and self-sustained development.

China also confirmed its support for key infrastructure projects, including the development of Gwadar Port and the vital KKH realignment project. In a significant move, China welcomed third-party investment in the major ML-1 railway upgrade, opening the door for broader international participation.
