China’s Wang Yi visits Pakistan for sixth key strategic talks

China and Pakistan deepen strategic ties with sixth dialogue, focusing on trade, defence, energy, and infrastructure.

Islamabad-China – (Special Correspondent / Web Desk) – Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi arrived at Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday to join the sixth Strategic Dialogue between Pakistan and China, according to a statement from the Foreign Office (FO).

Pakistan and China have built a longstanding strategic partnership that spans multiple sectors such as trade, energy, defence, and infrastructure. The fifth round of the dialogue took place in Beijing in May 2024, co-chaired by Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Wang Yi.

In a post on X, the FO confirmed that Wang Yi was warmly received by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar upon his arrival. “He will take part in the sixth Strategic Dialogue between the two nations,” the statement added.

The FO also shared that Wang reached Islamabad on Wednesday evening, where he was received by Ishaq Dar. Expressing his views on social media, Dar said, “Delighted to welcome my dear friend, H.E. Wang Yi, Foreign Minister of China. I look forward to meaningful discussions tomorrow and his meetings with President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.”

Before his arrival in Pakistan, Wang Yi, along with Ishaq Dar and Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, attended the Sixth Trilateral Dialogue in Kabul. The talks focused on political, economic, and security cooperation. According to the FO, the three nations pledged to enhance joint efforts against terrorism and strengthen collaboration in areas like regional development, trade, transit, education, health, culture, and anti-drug initiatives, including the expansion of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) to Afghanistan.

In July, Pakistan and China agreed to launch joint training programmes under the second phase of CPEC (CPEC-II). These programmes will focus on construction engineering, agriculture, artificial intelligence, and hospitality management, boosting skills and cooperation in multiple fields.

Looking ahead, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to travel to Beijing at the end of August to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit from August 31 to September 1. On the sidelines, he is also scheduled to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin. This important visit is set to mark the formal launch of CPEC-II, with a strong focus on industrial cooperation, after being delayed for almost five years.
