He said its formation showcased the founders’ commitment to democracy, comparing it to a sapling that has matured into a strong, thriving tree. Sadiq highlighted that upholding parliament’s authority and the Constitution was essential for the nation’s growth. He added that the first session reflected the will of the people, and that swift, meaningful lawmaking was needed to tackle present challenges.

The First Constituent Assembly of Pakistan was established in August 1947 as the highest federal legislature of the newly formed Dominion of Pakistan. It was given two major responsibilities — to frame a constitution for the country and to act as an interim parliament until the new system was in place.

Most of its early members had originally been elected to the Constituent Assembly of India. After the partition, they took up their roles in Pakistan’s assembly, helping shape the foundation of the new state.

Later in 1947, elections were held to select additional members for the Assembly, strengthening its representation and ensuring broader participation in the legislative process.

The Assembly held its first session soon after its creation. It continued to function for nearly nine years, until March 1956, when it was dissolved and replaced by the Parliament of Pakistan — carrying forward the work it had begun in shaping the nation’s democratic journey.
