Minister Tarar Reaffirms Pakistan’s Commitment to Dr Aafia Siddiqui’s Case, Addresses Misconceptions
Tarar says Dar’s remarks taken out of context.
Islamabad— Minister for Information Attaullah Tarar on Monday reiterated Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to the case of Dr Aafia Siddiqui, assuring full diplomatic and legal support from the government.
Speaking to journalists in Islamabad, Tarar clarified that Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar’s recent remarks regarding Dr Siddiqui had been taken out of context. “Senator Dar has already provided an explanation, but the issue is being misrepresented,” he said.
Highlighting the government’s active role, Tarar noted that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif personally met with Dr Fouzia Siddiqui, sister of Dr Aafia, and established a dedicated committee to pursue the matter further. “No previous government has made such sustained efforts for Dr Aafia Siddiqui as this one,” he emphasized.
During his visit to the United States, Tarar also addressed questions at the Atlantic Council in Washington concerning the legal proceedings against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan. He affirmed that a fair legal process is underway in Pakistan and drew a parallel with Dr Aafia’s prolonged incarceration in the U.S., stating that her detention reflects a legitimate legal process.
In response to allegations linking Ishaq Dar to the Sugar Advisory Board, Tarar dismissed the claims as misinformation, referring to statements made by former finance minister Miftah Ismail, who resigned from Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in 2023 over policy disputes.
On the subject of cryptocurrency regulation, Tarar said Pakistan is pioneering clear regulatory mechanisms, with a crypto council established and relevant legislation being implemented. He criticized those spreading unfounded allegations, noting that some critics within Pakistan seem to echo hostile narratives from neighboring countries. “It appears Miftah Ismail shares the same narrative on crypto as India,” he remarked.

Tarar concluded by stating that critics are unsettled by Pakistan’s improving economic outlook and “cannot digest economic progress unless they are in charge of the treasury.”
