World Test Championship Points Table After England Beats India

England now leads the five-match series 1–0 and will aim to consolidate by going 2–0 up in the second Test.

ISLAMABAD: In a pulsating first Test at Headingley, England eased past India by 5 wickets to open their World Test Championship (WTC) 2025–27 cycle in emphatic style, and it shows in the early standings as they leap to the top of the points table.

Needing 350 runs on the final day, Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley led the charge for their side against an uncharacteristically tame Indian bowling effort. Without their star Jasprit Bumrah offering any wickets, India looked helpless in their total’s defence despite some brief opportunities.

The result was unexpected given how the match started. India’s first innings’ total of 471 was bolstered by a heroic 147 from their newly minted skipper Shubman Gill and a stunning 134 from Rishabh Pant. The hosts responded with a total of 465 in reply before India, again, answered through KL Rahul (137) and Pant (118), setting England a stiff target of 371 with just a little over a day to go. England, however, had other ideas as Duckett’s 149 and significant cameos from Crawley (65), Jamie Smith and Joe Root helped their side seal a victory in the final hour.

England now moves to the top of this young World Test Championship points table as the only team to have secured a win, with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh also above India, as only four teams have begun their WTC 2025-27 campaigns.
