Cold, Dry Weather with Rain and Snow in Northern Pakistan
Islamabad: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a weather forecast for the period from December 21 to December 26, 2024, highlighting cold and dry weather conditions across most of Pakistan, with specific concerns for smog, fog, and isolated rainfall in certain regions.
According to the NDMA’s National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC), Punjab is expected to experience cold and dry weather, with significant smog and fog affecting the plains until December 26. The thick fog is likely to reduce visibility, especially during the early mornings and evenings, posing potential risks for travelers in the region.
In the Potohar region, which includes Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Attock, and northeastern parts of Punjab, cloudy weather is forecasted from December 23 to December 24, accompanied by the possibility of isolated rainfall. This will provide some relief to the cold and dry conditions but may cause temporary disruptions in the weather patterns. The rest of Punjab and other plains areas are likely to remain under the influence of persistent fog and smog.
In Balochistan and Sindh, cold and dry weather will dominate the entire forecast period, with no significant weather changes expected. Residents are advised to prepare for chilly conditions, particularly in the evenings and early mornings.
The weather in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will be predominantly cold, with intermittent isolated rainfall expected across most areas. The hilly regions of the province may also experience snowfall during the period. Similarly, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir are likely to remain cold, with isolated rain and snowfall on the higher elevations.
The NDMA has issued important safety advisories for residents, particularly those in northern and hilly areas. The public is urged to exercise caution while traveling due to the potential for slippery roads and reduced visibility, especially in the fog-prone areas. Travelers are advised to stay updated on road conditions and weather forecasts.
For those living in smog-affected regions, the NDMA recommends minimizing outdoor exposure and taking protective measures to safeguard against respiratory issues caused by poor air quality. This includes wearing masks and reducing physical activity during periods of high smog.
NDMA’s Advisory and Safety Tips:
- Travel Precautions: Exercise caution while driving in areas with reduced visibility due to fog or smog. Keep headlights on and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.
- Protective Measures: Residents in smog-affected areas should stay indoors as much as possible, wear masks, and limit strenuous outdoor activities.
- Road Safety: Drivers in hilly and northern regions are advised to take extra care on icy and slippery roads, especially in the event of snowfall.
The Pak NDMA Disaster Alert App provides real-time updates on weather conditions, emergency alerts, and safety guidelines for all regions. The NDMA urges citizens to stay informed and take necessary steps to ensure their safety during the forecast period.
