Violence Reignites in Kurram District; Four Dead, Two Injured in Latest Clashes
Violence has once again flared up in Kurram District, with ongoing gunfire reported between rival groups in the Shingak area. The clashes have resulted in four fatalities and two people being injured.
The previous day, gunmen on motorcycles attacked workers in the fields along the Shingak border, killing two and injuring three others. Local residents pursued the attackers, reportedly killing two of them in retaliation.
Dr. Syed Meer Hasan, the medical superintendent at Parachinar DHQ, confirmed that two bodies and five injured individuals were brought to the hospital for treatment yesterday. He noted that clashes in Kurram have become a regular occurrence, typically resulting in heavy casualties. However, recently, injured victims are being brought to the hospital more frequently, often within just a few days of each other, due to ongoing gunfire.
Deputy Commissioner Javedullah Mahsud described the attack as an act of terrorism and announced that an investigation is underway. He indicated that specific groups were involved in the violence.
Meanwhile, tribal elders have warned that the prolonged closure of key roads could lead to a severe humanitarian crisis, as food, medicine, and fuel supplies in the district are dwindling.
In response to the escalating conflict, members of a Grand Jirga, including tribal leaders from Hangu, Orakzai, and Kohat, have criticized the government for failing to take effective action. Despite multiple ceasefire agreements, little has been done to enforce them. The tribal leaders stressed that without proper government intervention when these agreements are breached, the accords become meaningless.
Elders from the Turi and Bangash tribes have also raised alarms about the worsening situation, as the road closures are cutting off vital supplies, creating fears of an imminent humanitarian disaster.
Authorities report that the death toll from the various clashes over the past week has now surpassed 20.
