Diplomatic Crisis Deepens as Canada Expels Indian Diplomats

Trudeau’s remarks underscore the seriousness of the situation, with both nations taking retaliatory measures in the escalating conflict.

On Wednesday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau criticized India for what he termed a “horrific mistake” in believing it could interfere so aggressively in Canada’s sovereignty. This statement comes just two days after Canada expelled six Indian diplomats, linking them to the murder of a Sikh separatist leader on Canadian soil and alleging a broader campaign targeting Indian dissidents.

Trudeau’s remarks represent the strongest position he has taken in a year-long diplomatic dispute that has severely strained relations between the two countries. “The Indian government made a horrific mistake in thinking that they could interfere as aggressively as they did in the safety and sovereignty of Canada,” he stated during an independent inquiry into foreign interference in Canadian politics.

In response, India’s foreign ministry issued a brief statement asserting that Trudeau’s comments confirmed India’s position that Canada has not provided any evidence to back its claims against Indian diplomats. “The responsibility for the damage that this cavalier behaviour has caused to India-Canada relations lies with Prime Minister Trudeau alone,” the statement read.

Trudeau mentioned that Ottawa might take additional measures to ensure the safety of Canadians, although he did not specify what those measures would entail. India has denied the allegations of interference and has responded by expelling six Canadian diplomats in a reciprocal action.
