England Posts Mammoth Total in Multan Test as Abdullah Shafique Falls for First-Ball Duck
Abdullah Shafique was dismissed for a golden duck on the first ball of Pakistan’s second innings in the Multan Test, following England’s record-setting total, the fourth-highest in Test cricket history.
After Pakistan’s strong first-innings score of 556, England responded with a colossal 823/7. Harry Brook led the charge with an impressive 317 from 322 balls, while Joe Root contributed 262 off 375 deliveries. Together, they set a new record for the highest partnership in Test cricket.
England’s total gave them a 267-run lead over Pakistan, with just under 40 overs remaining on the fourth day of play.
The 25-year-old Brook reached his triple century by hitting a four off spinner Saim Ayub, becoming the sixth English player to achieve the milestone. He completed the feat in 310 balls, striking 28 boundaries and three sixes.
The first-ever triple century in Test cricket was scored by England’s Andy Sandham, who made 325 against the West Indies in Kingston in 1930. Other Englishmen to have reached 300 include Len Hutton (364), Wally Hammond (336 not out), Graham Gooch (333 not out), and Bill Edrich (310 not out).
Since his debut in 2022, Brook has quickly established himself at the international level, including scoring three centuries against Pakistan in his second series, which England won 3-0.
Joe Root, Brook’s senior partner, narrowly missed out on his first triple century when he was dismissed leg-before by spinner Agha Salman for 262 shortly after lunch.
