T20 World Cup 2024;Pakistan beat Canada by seven wickets
Haris Rauf becomes fastest pacer to complete 100 T20I wickets,
USA;Pakistan secured their first win of the ICC T20 World Cup with a convincing seven-wicket victory over Canada in the 22nd match held at Nassau County International Stadium in New York on Tuesday.
This triumph came after disappointing losses to the USA and India. After put into bat, Canada struggled to build momentum and managed a modest total of 106 for 7 in their allotted 20 overs.
Aaron Johnson was the standout performer for Canada, scoring 52 off 44 balls, including four boundaries and four sixes. However, he received little support from the other end, as the Pakistani bowlers dominated the innings.
Key contributions from Pakistan’s bowlers included Mohammad Amir, who was named Player of the Match for his impressive figures of 2 for 13 in 4 overs. Haris Rauf also took two wickets, conceding 26 runs in his spell. Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah chipped in with a wicket each, while Imad Wasim executed a crucial run-out.
Pakistan have made one change in the playing XI as Saim Ayub has replaced Iftikhar Ahmed.
Once again, the game of “ifs and buts” has started for Pakistan’s chances to move into the next round of the tournament. Pakistan must defeat Canada (today) and Ireland on June 16 to enter Super 8 stage. They also need the US lose to India and Ireland.
And with ifs and buts, luck will also play its role; if the US manage even one more point, Pakistan will be ousted in the first stage.
It may be recalled that Pakistan and Canada have played only one T20 International on Oct 10, 2008 in King City, Ontario, and the Green Shirts won by 35 runs. Batting first, Pakistan scored 137-7 with opener Salman Butt contributing 74 runs and restricted Canada to 102-9.
For consolation of Pakistani fans, they must remember that the two-time world One-day cricket champions, the West Indies, failed to qualify for the World ODI Cup 2023 after losing to Zimbabwe, the Netherlands and Scotland in succession.
T20 World Cup 2024: Pakistan eye big win against Canada to stay alive
They were champions of the first two World Cups in 1975 and 1979, and runners-up in 1983. But it’s irony of fate that they had to play the World Cup Qualifiers because they finished ninth in the ODI Super League, and only the top eight teams gained direct entry to the 10-team tournament.
Haris Rauf has become the fastest pacer to complete 100 wickets in T20I format of cricket on Tuesday.
He achieved the milestone in a match against Canada as the Pakistan side is making out efforts to stay alive in the T20 World Cup 2024.
The right-arm pacer completed 100 wickets in 71 matches. Previously, the title was held by Ireland’s Mark Adair, who achieved the milestone in 72 matches.
Overall, Haris Rauf is the third fastest bowler to reach 100 T20I wickets. The other two players are spinners who achieved this feat in fewer matches. Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan took 54 matches and Sri Lanka’s Hasaranga 63 matches to complete 100 wickets.
In addition to this achievement, Haris Rauf is also the second Pakistani to take 100 wickets in Twenty20 Internationals. Shadab Khan is the highest wicket-taker for Pakistan with 107 wickets.
