5.6-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Sindh and Balochistan Regions

Earthquake tremors shake Sindh and Balochistan, reminding residents of Pakistan’s ongoing seismic risks and need for preparedness.

Balochistan  – (Web Desk) – On Thursday, several districts in Sindh and Balochistan experienced noticeable earthquake tremors, according to the Seismic Monitoring Centre of the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD). Residents reported feeling tremors in Sukkur, Jacobabad, Khuzdar, Jhal Magsi, Dadu, Naseerabad, and nearby areas.

In Khuzdar, the ground shook twice—first at 10:52 a.m. and again at 11:30 a.m., with the second tremor measuring a magnitude of 5.6. The epicentre was identified about 86 kilometres northeast of Khuzdar, the Centre confirmed. No loss of life or property has been reported.

Pakistan’s susceptibility to earthquakes stems from its location along the boundary of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. The country has experienced multiple devastating quakes in recent decades.

On January 19, 2025, a 5.8-magnitude earthquake rattled Islamabad, Swat, and Hunza, while the 2005 quake in Azad Kashmir killed over 73,000 people and left millions homeless. Balochistan also suffered in 2021, when a quake in Harnai killed at least 20 people and hampered rescue operations due to landslides.

Beyond Remittances: The Strategic Pivot in Pakistan-UAE Relations

Experts warn that the rugged terrain of Pakistan’s earthquake-prone areas complicates relief efforts and makes preparedness critical. The recent tremors in Sindh and Balochistan serve as a reminder of the ongoing seismic threat in the region.
