27th Amendment abolishes the CJCSC office and names the Army Chief as the Defense Forces Chief.
Pakistan's government proposes major military reforms to centralize command and create senior lifetime ranks.
Islamabad – (Special Correspondent / Web Desk) – Pakistani government has proposed significant changes to the country’s constitution concerning the military’s leadership. A new draft amendment bill has been approved by the federal cabinet to reform the structure of the armed forces.
Under the proposed changes, the President will appoint the Chief of the Army Staff, who will also be given the additional title of Chief of Defence Forces. This appointment will be made based on the advice of the Prime Minister. In the same way, the heads of the Navy and Air Force will also be appointed by the President on the Prime Minister’s recommendation.
A key part of the plan is to remove the position of Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee by the end of November 2025. This step is meant to bring the main command of the military under one leader, the new Chief of Defence Forces. This top commander will also have a say in recommending an officer to lead the National Strategic Command, who will then be appointed by the Prime Minister.

The amendment also introduces special lifetime ranks for the most senior officers. Those who reach the highest ranks of Field Marshal, Marshal of the Air Force, or Admiral of the Fleet will be allowed to keep their uniform and privileges for their entire life. These individuals will be honored as national heroes.
These top-ranking officers will be granted legal protections similar to those given to the President of Pakistan. They can only be removed from their status through a specific constitutional process. The federal government will be responsible for officially defining the duties and benefits for these lifelong positions.
