2. Balochistan Reports 15th Polio Case of 2024
A new polio case has emerged in Pakistan, raising the total for the year to 22 confirmed infections. The National Institute of Health reported that a two-and-a-half-year-old child from the Pishin district in Balochistan has tested positive for the virus.
This case is the 15th polio infection documented in Balochistan in 2024 alone.
Earlier this year, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif initiated a nationwide anti-polio campaign targeting 115 districts, with the goal of vaccinating 30 million children under five years old.
To support this effort, approximately 286,000 polio workers were mobilized for door-to-door vaccinations.
However, the campaign faces significant challenges, highlighted by a recent terrorist attack on the Zhob-DI Khan National Highway that resulted in the deaths of three Anti-Terrorist Force (ATF) personnel assigned to protect polio workers, emphasizing the dangers encountered by those involved in vaccination efforts.
