17 Dead, Nearly 40 Injured in Andhra Pradesh Pharmaceutical Plant Explosion

Rescue operations concluded on Thursday at a pharmaceutical manufacturing plant in Andhra Pradesh, India, following an explosion that occurred the previous day. The blast at Escientia Advanced Sciences in the Anakapalli district resulted in 17 fatalities and nearly 40 injuries, according to a senior state official.

Indian Armed Forces Record 16.5% Suicide Rate Per 100,000 Personnel

The explosion, which is the state’s most severe industrial incident in recent years, occurred at the 40-acre facility. Industries Secretary N. Yuvaraj confirmed that the rescue efforts were completed and that nearly 40 people had been injured.

Escientia Advanced Sciences has not yet responded to requests for comment. Government officials suspect that the explosion originated from a chemical reactor, with preliminary investigations pointing to a vapor leak that triggered chemical reactions and led to the blast. The solvent involved has been identified as methyl tert-butyl ether.

Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage and questioning survivors to determine if human error contributed to the incident. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the victims’ families in a post on X.

India, often referred to as the “pharmacy of the world,” hosts numerous pharmaceutical manufacturing plants. This incident follows a similar fire in the same district last year at Sahithi Pharma, which resulted in two deaths and five injuries.
