SC Directs Urgent Consultation between Lahore High Court Chief Justice and Election Commission

The Supreme Court temporarily suspended the Election Commission’s April 26 letter and subsequent notifications from the Lahore High Court dated May 29 and June 12 until further consultation takes place.

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has issued a formal order to hear an appeal from the Election Commission challenging the Lahore High Court’s establishment of 8 election tribunals. In its decree, the Supreme Court emphasized the constitutional importance and respect due to both the Election Commission and the Office of the Chief Justice of Lahore High Court.

During proceedings, the court noted agreement from the Attorney General that meaningful consultation should precede any decision, refraining from immediate judgment on the case’s merits. The Supreme Court temporarily suspended the Election Commission’s April 26 letter and subsequent notifications from the Lahore High Court dated May 29 and June 12 until further consultation takes place.
