Journalism is not just a profession; it is a responsibility that provides an opportunity to closely observe, understand, and convey facts to the public. Recently, I had the chance to visit the United States on a study tour, where I explored various cities, institutions, and journalistic organizations. During this journey, I closely observed American society, economy, climate change, agriculture, and the activities of the Pakistani and Kashmiri communities living there. This report summarizes those experiences and observations.
My journey began on February 14 from Islamabad. After brief stopovers in Paris, Berlin, and Amsterdam, I finally arrived in Houston, Texas. Texas was chosen because it holds a central position in the U.S. economy and is home to a large population of Pakistanis and Kashmiris.
At George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, my hosts, Mr. Adnan Khurshid and Mr. Imtiaz Khan, were there to welcome me. After an initial conversation, we went to a well-known Arabic restaurant, where I had the opportunity to taste unique Gulf cuisine. Later, we visited the home of Sagheer Khan, a highly hospitable and active member of the Pakistani community in Houston. Additionally, my dear friend Muhammad Maroof Khan extended exceptional hospitality.
Texas is one of the largest agricultural states in the U.S., and its agricultural model is considered exemplary worldwide. I visited several farms and spoke with farmers, which led to some interesting insights. Farmers in Texas use drone technology, automated irrigation systems, and digital sensors to ensure precise water and fertilizer distribution, resulting in increased crop yields.
Texas is also known for its cattle farming. Due to modern farming techniques, milk and meat production have increased. Special attention is given to the health of livestock, and their diet is managed according to scientific principles.
To combat drought, Texas farmers are researching seeds that can grow efficiently with minimal water. Additionally, the use of organic fertilizers is being promoted to maintain soil fertility.
Climate change is one of the most pressing global issues, and the U.S. is placing significant emphasis on research in this area. During my visit to various universities and research institutions in Houston, I learned about several key initiatives:
Wind and Solar Energy Projects – To reduce reliance on fossil fuels, Texas is investing heavily in wind and solar energy projects.
Efficient Water Usage Planning – With rising temperatures and climate change concerns, Texas is developing recycling water systems and smart irrigation methods to optimize water use.
Disaster Management Improvements – After Hurricane Harvey in 2017, the government has enhanced drainage systems and introduced advanced mechanisms to mitigate storm risks.
The Pakistani and Kashmiri communities in Houston are highly active and well-established. During my stay, I attended multiple social and political events organized by the community.
The Pakistani community is actively participating in local politics, with many individuals securing positions in city councils, educational boards, and government institutions.
The Kashmiri community regularly organizes seminars, protests, and awareness campaigns to highlight the Kashmir issue on an international level. Advocate Sardar Muhammad Anwar Khan is playing a crucial role in these efforts.
The community’s youth have formed a “Kashmir Cricket Team,” which fosters unity and engagement within the community.
Houston is among the fastest-growing cities in the U.S., and Pakistanis have achieved remarkable success in various industries.
Pakistani and Kashmiri entrepreneurs are excelling in the real estate business and are involved in major construction projects.
Many young professionals are making strides in the IT sector, with some running successful software startups.
Pakistani cuisine is gaining popularity, and many Pakistanis have established successful restaurants and catering businesses.
This journey provided me with invaluable insights, unique experiences, and a closer look at the progress of the Pakistani community in Texas. I not only observed Texas’s agriculture and economy but also gained a deeper understanding of the struggles, successes, and challenges faced by Pakistanis living there.
This was a memorable and enlightening experience that expanded my journalistic perspective. I look forward to visiting this great state again in the future to discover more new stories!
