Pakistan Participates in 12th UNTOC Conference in Vienna

Delegation Led by Key Officials to Tackle Transnational Organized Crime

The 12th session of the Conference of Parties (COP) to the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC) commenced recently in Vienna. Pakistan’s delegation is led by the Director Generals of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), the Anti-Money Laundering Authority, and the country’s Permanent Representative to the UN in Vienna.

UNTOC stands as the primary international framework for addressing transnational organized crime. This biennial conference serves as an essential platform for member states to engage in discussions and formulate strategies aimed at enhancing cooperation in the fight against organized crime, while also reviewing the progress in implementing the Convention and its associated protocols.

During the opening session, Ahmad Ishaque Jehangir, the Director General of FIA, reaffirmed Pakistan’s dedication to confronting the challenges posed by transnational organized crime. He emphasized the necessity for a comprehensive approach to tackle the underlying issues contributing to such crime.

The DG FIA pointed out that economic inequality, conflict, and a lack of opportunities create a conducive environment for criminal activities. He advocated for promoting inclusive and sustainable development as a key strategy to combat these challenges.

He also called for international cooperation rooted in mutual respect and shared responsibility, underscoring the importance of enhancing the capabilities of developing nations in addressing organized crimes like money laundering, human trafficking, and cybercrime.

Furthermore, he highlighted Pakistan’s ongoing initiatives to combat various forms of organized crime, particularly human trafficking and migrant smuggling, while stressing the importance of expanding legal migration pathways to mitigate irregular migration.

In his remarks on corruption and illicit financial flows, the DG FIA noted Pakistan’s legislative reforms aimed at curbing money laundering and terrorist financing. He urged the global community to expedite the return of stolen assets to developing countries, ensuring that these resources are redirected toward socio-economic development.

The DG FIA reiterated Pakistan’s firm commitment to collaborating with the international community to tackle the complex challenges presented by transnational organized crime. “A united global effort is crucial for achieving the goals of the UNTOC and fostering a safer, fairer world for all,” he stated.
