Pakistan Lauds Ankara Declaration for Promoting Peace Between Ethiopia and Somalia

Ambassador Khan Backs Ankara Declaration for Regional Peace

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has praised the Ankara Declaration, which aims to resolve differences between Ethiopia and Somalia, contributing to regional peace and stability. The declaration was discussed during a meeting between Dr. Jemal Beker, Special Envoy and Ambassador Extraordinary of Ethiopia to Pakistan, Turkmenistan, and the Kyrgyz Republic, and Ambassador Hamid Asghar Khan, Additional Secretary for Africa at Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Dr. Beker highlighted the significant role played by Turkey in facilitating dialogue between Ethiopia and Somalia, which he believes will help integrate the region and promote peace, prosperity, and development. He also noted that the Ankara Declaration reflects Ethiopia’s foreign policy reforms, focusing on fostering stronger ties with neighboring countries for long-term peace and sustainable development.

The declaration, Dr. Beker explained, aims to achieve a win-win scenario, ensuring peace and stability while also securing Ethiopia’s access to the sea, in accordance with international law. He also acknowledged Ethiopia’s contributions to global peace, citing its participation in United Nations Peacekeeping Missions.

Ambassador Khan welcomed the Ankara Declaration, emphasizing that dialogue remains the only solution to resolving regional issues. He commended Ethiopia’s role in maintaining regional peace and stability and expressed Pakistan’s support for the initiative.

The two ambassadors also reviewed the broader relationship between Ethiopia and Pakistan, discussing future initiatives to strengthen bilateral ties, including the upcoming Single Country Exhibition in Addis Ababa scheduled for May 2025.
