Khawaja Asif Claims Pakistan-Congress Alliance Seeks Restoration of Article 370
Pakistani Defence Minister Khawaja Asif announced that the government of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the Congress-National Conference have come together to advocate for the restoration of Article 370 in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir. This statement coincides with the upcoming Assembly elections in the region, marking the first electoral process since the special status of the former state was revoked in 2019.
In an interview with Geo News, Asif expressed optimism regarding the alliance’s prospects in the elections, suggesting that they are well-positioned to win and potentially take control of the occupied territory. He emphasized the significance of this political collaboration in addressing the aspirations of the people in Jammu and Kashmir and reaffirming their rights.
As the elections approach, the focus on restoring Article 370 highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding the region and the importance of its political landscape. The alliance’s commitment to this issue may resonate with voters who seek a return to the former autonomy of the state, thereby influencing the electoral outcome. The developments in Jammu and Kashmir continue to be a critical aspect of Pakistan’s foreign policy and internal politics.
“They (the alliance) have made it an election issue. Pakistan and the National Conference-Congress alliance are on the same page in occupied Jammu and Kashmir to restore Article 370 and 35A,” Asif said.
The National Conference has pledged to restore Article 370, while the Congress party has not mentioned the issue in its manifesto. Instead, Congress is concentrating on its commitment to reinstating full statehood for Jammu and Kashmir.

The abrogation of Article 370 and the division of the former state into two union territories have evoked significant emotions among the residents of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, especially in the Valley. This change has deeply affected the local population, leading to widespread discontent and a strong desire for the restoration of their previous status.
Both the National Conference and Mehbooba Mufti’s People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have prominently featured this issue in their manifestos. They emphasize the importance of restoring the special status that Article 370 provided, which many in the region view as crucial for preserving their identity and autonomy. The political discourse surrounding this topic reflects the community’s ongoing struggles and aspirations for self-determination.
As the Assembly elections approach, these parties are leveraging the sentiments of the populace to galvanize support. Their commitment to addressing the implications of the Article 370 repeal resonates with voters who are seeking to reclaim their rights and safeguard their future in a changing political landscape. The sensitivity of this issue underscores its centrality to the upcoming electoral battle in the region.
