Karachi’s Crime Rate Soars with 5,960 Incidents in August, CPLC Reports

3. 150 Cars Stolen, 23 Snatched, and 1,737 Cell Phones Robbed

Karachi-(Staff REporter)-A report by the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) has revealed a disturbing surge in criminal incidents in Karachi, with 5,960 cases reported in August alone. The majority of these incidents involved snatching and theft, with 5,951 cases of cell phone, motorbike, and vehicle theft reported.

The report highlights the following statistics:

– 150 cars stolen and 23 others snatched at gunpoint
– 656 motorcycles snatched and 3,385 others stolen
– 1,737 mobile phones snatched from citizens
– 3 cases of kidnapping for ransom and 6 cases of extortion

This brings the total number of criminal incidents in Karachi to over 44,000 in the first seven months of 2024, with over 31,000 incidents of motorcycle theft and snatching, and over 1,000 cases of car theft and snatching.

However, Sindh Inspector General of Police Ghulam Nabi Memon has claimed a significant decrease in street crime and an increase in case detection due to effective measures. He also stated that the Sindh government is providing resources and facilities to police stations and personnel.

Earlier this year, Sindh’s senior minister Sharjeel Inam Memon had blamed “illegal settlers” for the prevalence of street crimes, stating that the government is making every possible effort to control them.

The report highlights the need for continued efforts to address the rising crime rate in Karachi and ensure public safety.
