India bounce back on day one; Border-Gavaskar Trophy

Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah led the charge on day one of the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Optus Stadium in Perth, picking up four wickets to leave Australia reeling at 67/7 at stumps. This impressive performance was backed up by other bowlers, particularly Mohammed Siraj, who claimed two wickets, and debutant Harshit Rana, who took one wicket.

The Indian team, batting first, was bowled out for 150, with Nitish Reddy top-scoring with 41 runs. The Australian pace trio of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Pat Cummins restricted India’s batting, but Bumrah’s four-fer turned the tables around. His wickets included Nathan McSweeney, Usman Khawaja, Steve Smith, and Pat Cummins, giving India the upper hand. This day saw a record 17 wickets fall, the most in a single day of Test cricket in Australia since 1952. The match is shaping up to be an exciting contest, with India seeking to capitalize on their strong bowling performance.

After opting to bat first, the Indian batters off to a horrendous start with Nitish Kumar Reddy (41) and Risabh Pant (37) providing some impetus to the Indian innings before they were bundled out for 150.

For Australia, Josh Hazlewood spearheaded the bowling department, picking up four crucial wickets to put India on the back foot.

Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Mitchell Marsh had grabbed two wickets apiece.

But the Indian bowlers sprung their surprise against the home team and put their batters to the test.

The hosts were struggling on 67 for 7 before the end of day one.

It is pertinent to note that India is playing the first Test without their regular captain Rohit Sharma due to a personal commitment.

The onus is lying on Jasprit Bumrah to make efforts for emerging India as the victor in the Optus Stadium.
