China-(Special Correspondent): Apple’s iPhone sales in China dipped by 0.3% in Q3 of 2024, while rival Huawei saw a remarkable 42% increase, highlighting the growing competition in the world’s largest smartphone market.
Apple claimed the second spot with a 15.6% market share, a 0.5 percentage-point decrease from the previous year, whereas Huawei surged to third place with 15.3%, gaining 4.2 percentage points, according to IDC data released on Friday. Vivo maintained the lead in the market, holding an 18.6% share, largely through its budget-friendly models.
Huawei’s resurgence, marked by the premium Mate 60 series that analysts say features domestically manufactured chips, intensified competition with Apple, further bolstered by the recent launch of its Pura 70 model. Apple, meanwhile, has faced challenges, including restrictions on iPhone use in some government agencies. In response, the company launched several discount campaigns to bolster sales.
The third quarter also benefited from the launch of Apple’s iPhone 16 on September 20, which initially saw sales rise by 20% compared to 2023’s models during the first three weeks. On the same day, Huawei introduced a competing tri-foldable phone, adding to the rivalry.
According to IDC, Apple’s launch propelled it back into China’s top five smartphone vendors with a 15.6% market share. The company anticipates further demand with increased promotions and the future release of Apple Vision Pro.
Overall, China’s smartphone sales climbed 3.2% in Q3 to reach 68.78 million units.
