Pakistan strongly condemns Indian SC Verdict on Article 370

Indian SC upholds Modi govt decision to remove limited autonomy of the Muslim-majority region.

Pakistan strongly condemns Indian SC Verdict on Article 370. In a strong and swift response, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister, Jalil Abbas Jilani, condemned the recent decision by the Indian Supreme Court to uphold the revocation of Article 370. This move, initiated by Prime Minister Modi’s government, eliminated the limited autonomy previously granted to the Muslim-majority region of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

Jilani characterized the verdict as a “travesty of justice” during a media address, expressing Pakistan’s deep concern over the decision. The 2019 move, accompanied by a communication blackout, lockdown, and mass arrests, aimed at integrating IIOJK more closely with the rest of India.

The Supreme Court justified its decision, calling it a legitimate exercise of power and a culmination of the integration process. Modi’s approach to IIOJK has been widely controversial, and the removal of Article 370 faced challenges from pro-India political parties and local groups. The court’s ruling called for the restoration of IIOJK to statehood, equivalent to any other Indian state, and mandated state elections by September 30, 2024. Security measures were heightened in anticipation of potential unrest, with troops and police deployed in Srinagar.
