UN Declares July 6 as World Rural Development Day
UNITED NATIONS-The United Nations General Assembly has unanimously approved a resolution, introduced by Bangladesh, to establish July 6 as “World Rural Development Day.”
This decision marks the successful conclusion of Bangladesh’s initiative. The 193-member Assembly adopted the resolution without a vote, with support from Pakistan and 42 other countries, underscoring the significance of advancing rural development.
The resolution encourages all UN Member States, along with international and regional organizations, NGOs, and other relevant parties, to observe this day with activities suited to their local and regional contexts.
Additionally, the UN Secretary-General has been tasked with notifying all relevant entities to ensure the observance of World Rural Development Day, fostering a collective commitment to advancing rural development worldwide.
The resolution aims to create equal opportunities and address the needs of rural communities as part of the global effort to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) focused on combating poverty.

Bangladesh’s UN Ambassador, Muhammad Abdul Muhith, introduced the resolution, emphasizing the importance of tackling key issues such as poverty reduction, boosting food production, promoting socio-economic development, and restoring ecosystems.
Choosing July 6 commemorates the founding of the Center for Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific (CIRDAP) in 1979, acknowledging its significant role in advancing rural development in the region.
