U.S. President Affirms 75-Year Relationship with Pakistan

Biden Welcomes Ambassador Sheikh and Stresses Need for Stronger Ties

During a ceremony in Washington, D.C., U.S. President Joe Biden underscored the importance of Pakistan-U.S. relations for ensuring regional stability and security as he received the Letter of Credence from Pakistan’s new Ambassador, Rizwan Saeed Sheikh.

Biden highlighted the ongoing collaboration between the two countries in the fight against terrorism, stating, “The relationship between our two countries is crucial for regional stability and security.” He expressed a commitment to enhancing bilateral ties in the future.

However, despite these optimistic statements, Biden’s administration has been enforcing sanctions on entities linked to Pakistan’s arms and weapons development, indicating that there are significant disagreements within the partnership.

State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller reiterated that the U.S. would not support Pakistan’s ballistic missile program and would use sanctions to protect national interests.

Biden characterized the longstanding partnership as essential for tackling global issues, such as climate change and health security. He welcomed Ambassador Sheikh, emphasizing the importance of their relationship, which has lasted over 75 years.

In his remarks, Ambassador Sheikh extended greetings from Pakistan’s leadership and underscored the significant trade potential between the two nations, noting that the U.S. continues to be the largest market for Pakistani exports.
