U.S. Offers $5 Million Reward for Information on Missing American in Afghanistan

Mr. Habibi was abducted on August 10, 2022, in Kabul, along with his driver, while traveling by vehicle in the Afghan capital.

Washington, D.C. — The U.S. Department of State’s Rewards for Justice (RFJ) program has announced a reward of up to $5 million for information leading to the location, recovery, and safe return of Mahmood Shah Habibi, an American businessman who went missing in Afghanistan nearly three years ago.

Mr. Habibi was abducted on August 10, 2022, in Kabul, along with his driver, while traveling by vehicle in the Afghan capital. According to U.S. officials, he was detained by the Taliban’s General Directorate of Intelligence. At the time of his disappearance, he was working as a consultant for a local telecommunications firm. Since then, there has been no verified communication from Mr. Habibi, and the Taliban has not provided any information about his status or condition.

The RFJ program urges anyone with relevant information to come forward and contact them through secure messaging platforms Signal, Telegram, or WhatsApp at +1-202-702-7843. Details of the reward offer can be found on the official RFJ website at rewardsforjustice.net.

“Mahmood Shah Habibi is a U.S. citizen, and his safety and return remain a top priority for the United States,” said a spokesperson for the State Department. “We are seeking any credible information that can help bring him home.”
