U.S. Judge Grants Aafia Siddiqui Access to New Evidence for Clemency Petition
Legal team optimistic about materials from 2009 that may support case.
A U.S. judge has granted Dr. Aafia Siddiqui’s legal team permission to access new confidential evidence that could support their clemency petition.
U.S. District Judge Richard M. Berman made the ruling, enabling Siddiqui’s attorneys to review crucial discovery materials from 2009, though access is limited due to national security concerns.
Clive Stafford Smith, one of her lawyers, expressed hope that the new evidence concerning Siddiqui’s detention at a “Black Site” after her isolation at Bagram will prove beneficial.
He has also filed an extensive 56,600-word clemency petition, which outlines the complexities and alleged injustices surrounding Siddiqui’s case.
This legal motion is grounded in a statute that allows federal inmates to contest their convictions based on specific grounds, including constitutional violations and jurisdictional issues in court.
The petition cites provisions that permit sentence reductions under extraordinary circumstances, such as severe health issues.
