Supreme Court Sets Date to Hear ECP’s Appeal Against Election Tribunals

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court has scheduled the hearing for the Election Commission of Pakistan‘s appeal against the Election Tribunals, with a bench led by Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faiz Isa, to be conducted on June 20.
Sources reveal that the bench, chaired by Chief Justice Isa and including Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan, will oversee the proceedings regarding the Election Commission’s application.
This development comes after the Election Commission lodged an appeal with the Supreme Court challenging the establishment of election tribunals by the Lahore High Court.

Chief Justice LHC Addresses Interference Concerns; Pledges to Uphold Judicial Independence
RAWALPINDI: Chief Justice of Lahore High Court, Justice Malik Shahzad Ahmed, has raised concerns about interference by the establishment in the judiciary, stating that certain institutions are involved, albeit without naming them.
Speaking at a function in Rawalpindi, Justice Ahmed emphasized his commitment to upholding judicial independence. He recounted his efforts to abolish the culture of strikes within the legal community, urging lawyers to refrain from disrupting court proceedings.
Justice Ahmed commended the majority of lawyers as law-abiding citizens, citing significant reductions in pending cases in Punjab due to their cooperation. However, he highlighted persistent interference from certain quarters, tracing its origins back to historical cases like the Maulvi Tamizuddin case.

Despite challenges, Justice Ahmed assured that the judiciary remains resolute in its duties, citing the courage of a district judge who refused to succumb to pressure and pledged to uphold justice without fear or favor.
