Salik Hussain Emphasizes Education’s Role in Empowering Women
ISLAMABAD: Minister for Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony, Chaudhry Salik Hussain, on Friday emphasized the vital role of women in society, underscoring that an educated woman is the first teacher of her children, instilling values, ethics, and a love for knowledge.
Speaking at the global conference on ‘Girls’ Education in Muslim Societies: Challenges and Opportunities,’ the minister highlighted that an educated mother plays a crucial role in shaping future leaders by imparting wisdom and principles to her children.
Chaudhry Salik Hussain noted that women occupy central positions in society as mothers, daughters, wives, and professionals. He quoted the teachings of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), who emphasized the importance of education for women, calling it essential for nurturing generations and shaping the future of societies.
The minister further emphasized that acquiring knowledge is both a fundamental religious obligation and a necessary condition for societal progress and public welfare. “Education empowers women to actively participate in societal development, contribute to economic growth, advocate for their rights, and engage in decision-making processes,” he added.
Citing examples from Islamic history, Chaudhry Salik Hussain pointed out the inspirational legacy of women in Islam. However, he acknowledged that many Muslim societies still face challenges to women’s education due to cultural barriers, economic constraints, and security concerns.
“These challenges are not rooted in Islam but are instead the result of social traditions and misinterpretations of religious teachings,” he clarified, urging the need to address these issues through collective wisdom and efforts.
The minister called for a collaborative approach to overcoming these barriers, urging governments, religious scholars, and community leaders to create an environment where girls feel safe and supported in their educational pursuits. He suggested providing scholarships, financial aid, and establishing secure, accessible schools to facilitate girls’ education. Additionally, he stressed the importance of raising awareness about the Islamic perspective on women’s education and involving religious leaders to counter cultural misconceptions.
In light of technological advancements, Chaudhry Salik Hussain emphasized the opportunities available to enhance education, including e-learning platforms, community-based initiatives, and public-private partnerships. “We must leverage these tools to ensure that every girl, regardless of her socioeconomic background, has access to quality education,” he stated.

Together, we can dispel misconceptions, break down barriers, and pave the way for a brighter, more inclusive future where every woman contributes to the development and prosperity of her community,” he concluded.
