Plastic pollution refers to the harmful effects of plastic materials on the environment, wildlife, and human health. Plastic waste, including bags, bottles, microbeads, and other synthetic materials, can
enter the environment through litter, wastewater, and industrial activities. Pakistan is developing country with population of over 220million, and plastic waste have become significant environmental challenges due to the lack of proper waste management system. According to the report of nations development
program, Pakistan generates approximately 20 million tons of solid in every year, of which About 5 to 10% is plastic waste. According to the study conducted by worldwide fund of nature in 2018, Pakistan is the one of the top 10 countries in the world for Plastic pollution. The plastic pollution in Pakistan has
several environmental and human health impacts. The accumulation of plastic in the environment leads to air, water and soil pollution which can cause long-term damage to ecosystem. Plastic waste can release harmful chemicals in the soil and water, which can then enter the food chain Causing many diseases in human and animals.
Use of Biodegradable plastics helps to overcome plastic pollution. Biodegradable plastics are made from renewable resources like corn starch, sugarcane, or potato starch, which can decompose easily.
Biodegradable plastics can replace traditional plastics in packaging, bags, and disposable cutlery, reducing the amount of plastic waste.
Biodegradable plastics can be composted, turning into carbon dioxide, water, and biomass, reducing plastic pollution. Biodegradable plastics are less harmful to wildlife and the environment compared to traditional plastics. Encouraging sustainable practices: Biodegradable plastics promote sustainable
practices and raise awareness about plastic pollution. To effectively overcome plastic pollution, we need a multi-faceted approach like, reduce plastic increase recycling- Implement extended producer responsibility, encourage sustainable practices, Develop innovative. Remember, biodegradable plastics are just one part of the solution, and we must continue to work towards a plastic-pollution-free future.
