Pakistan Slashes EV Import Duties to 1% in Bid to Boost Green Transport
Islamabad-Pakistan has taken a significant step towards sustainable transportation by unveiling a groundbreaking policy to promote electric vehicles (EVs). The government has drastically reduced import duties on electric vehicles and their components to accelerate EV adoption. Under the new policy, customs duty on specific parts of electric vehicles has been fixed at 1%, while customs duty on completely built-up (CBU) import of EVs has been slashed to 10%.
Engineering Development Board General Manager Asim Ejaz revealed that import duties on electric vehicles and motorcycle parts have been slashed from 30% and 15% respectively to just 1%. This substantial reduction in EV import duties marks a pivotal shift in Pakistan’s transportation policy.
“We are actively working to make advanced electric vehicle technology more accessible to the public,” Ejaz stated. He acknowledged that while previous concerns about EV reliability had affected consumer confidence, Pakistan now has access to significantly improved and more dependable electric vehicle technology.
The policy board emphasized that this initiative aligns with global trends toward sustainable transportation. As countries worldwide embrace electric mobility, Pakistan’s transition to EVs is expected to yield significant economic benefits, particularly in reducing the nation’s substantial fuel import expenditure.
