“Over a Dozen Arrested in Clash with Police Outside Chicago’s Israeli Consulate”
"Violent Clash Outside Israeli Consulate in Chicago Leads to Over a Dozen Arrests During DNC Convention"
CHICAGO — Over a dozen pro-Palestinian protesters were arrested on Tuesday after a demonstration outside the Israeli consulate in Chicago turned violent and spilled onto the streets. The protest coincided with the second night of the Democratic National Convention.
Tensions escalated early in the demonstration when some protesters, many of whom were masked and dressed in black, charged at a line of police blocking their path. The protesters managed to advance past the officers but were subsequently contained multiple times throughout the night by police in riot gear, who prevented them from dispersing.
Police labeled the gathering as an “unlawful assembly” and used wooden clubs to corral protesters, restricting their movement and preventing them from marching. During the unrest, some demonstrators set an American flag on fire and others waved Palestinian flags. As the protest continued, a call to “shut down the DNC” was made by a masked individual.

This protest was separate from the coalition-organized demonstrations earlier in the week, which had seen large, peaceful marches advocating for a ceasefire. The Tuesday night protests marked a stark contrast, with a more confrontational atmosphere.
In response to the clash, Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling defended the officers’ restraint, stating that they did not use chemical sprays and aimed to de-escalate the situation. He reported that while the majority of protesters were peaceful, some engaged in violence and vandalism.
The ongoing protests have drawn varying responses, including condemnation from pro-Israel groups and support from local activists. The authorities have increased security measures and are prepared for more demonstrations throughout the week.
