NEOC Issues GLOF Alert Amid Rising Temperatures and Monsoon Rains in Northern Pakistan

The NDMA has strongly urged residents, tourists, and trekkers to avoid travel near glaciers, glacial lakes, and riverbanks in the alert zones.

Islamabad — The National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC), operating under the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), has issued a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) alert for Pakistan’s northern regions as extreme weather conditions intensify.

The alert comes amid a dangerous convergence of high temperatures, heavy monsoon currents, and a prevailing westerly wave, which has sharply increased hydrometeorological pressure on glacial lakes across the region.

Over the past few weeks, sustained heatwaves have led to accelerated snow and glacier melt, while recent monsoon rainfall and thunderstorms have heightened the risk of sudden outbursts. The areas identified as most vulnerable include Reshun, Brep, Booni, Sardar Gol, Thalu 1 & 2, Badswat, Hinarchi, Darkut, and Hundur.

High Risk to Lives, Livelihoods, and Infrastructure

Sudden GLOF events could result in flash floods, threatening human lives, livestock, farmland, and critical infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and communication lines. Access to remote valleys may become temporarily blocked, impeding relief and rescue efforts.

The NDMA has strongly urged residents, tourists, and trekkers to avoid travel near glaciers, glacial lakes, and riverbanks in the alert zones. Locals are advised to stay updated through official warnings and to comply with evacuation orders when issued by district authorities.

Community Vigilance and Preparedness

The public is encouraged to report unusual signs such as sudden changes in water flow, cracking sounds from glaciers, or ground vibrations to nearby disaster management officials. The NDMA remains in close coordination with provincial and district administrations to monitor the evolving situation and execute timely response strategies.
